This is such an easy - add a touch of Anthropology to your home without actually spending Anthropology money - project.
I promise, the work time is a total of five minutes.
FIVE MINUTES!
To look this cute, y’all!
Now, if you have some clean jars already, then you‘re set. If not, feel free to jump over to my post about How To Clean Out Jars and Candles!
You can also use this method on any glass surface, customize some wine glasses, make your own beer glasses, soap dispensers, windows, if ya want. Go label crazy!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 to 3 to however many jars you want to repurpose!
- Matte Mod Podge
- 1 Sponge Brush
- 1 Regular Paint Brush
- Your printed apothecary labels
(I got this free printable sheet from https://thegraphicsfairy.com/diy-vintage-apothecary-jar-labels/ )
- Small cup of water
- Jar of Brown Acrylic Paint mixed VERY well with water
- Cardboard, or a magazine, some sort of surface to paint on
Now pick your label, and start painting along the edges.
I found that it helped to blot out the paint on your cardboard surface first, to give you some more control over the effect.
Once the edges are covered start sporadically blotching the label. Dipping your brush in a little bit of the water helps dilute it more to give the illusion of varying degrees of “wear”.
Remember, you’re going for used up, vintage, water stains, so you actually don’t want it to be pretty and perfect.
Now, let it dry!
Once dry, you’ll add a very thin layer of the Mod Podge on top. This seals the label and makes it waterproof - a very important step if you’ll be using your jar in the bathroom or kitchen! After it’s completely covered you’ll want to pick it up, very carefully, to make sure that it isn’t sticking to the cardboard. Now let it dry.
There will be a slight film over the print but the Mod Podge dries clear and will look like this when 100% dry:
It really brings out the colors!
After the label is dry you’ll go back to your Mod Podge and add another thin layer to the back
Always start from the inside out
Now peel and stick!
The best part about Mod Podge is that it’s very forgiving, if your label is a little off center or tilted you can easily slide it into place - not too much! But just a little is fine. Make sure to smooth out all of the edges, smooth any bubbles out, and that’s it!
As I mentioned, use the jars for plants, food, desk organizing, whatever you could think of!
So easy, so cute, so worth saving you a $35 dollar trip to Anthropology.
Happy crafting!
